Spotting Heatstroke in Your Dog: Essential Information for Dog Owners

Heatstroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when a dog’s body temperature rises to dangerous levels. Being able to recognise the signs of heatstroke early can save your dog’s life. Here’s what to look out for and what to do if you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke.

Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs

  1. Excessive Panting – Dogs pant to cool down, but excessive or rapid panting is a key sign of heatstroke.
  2. Drooling – Excessive drooling or thick, sticky saliva can indicate overheating.
  3. Bright Red or Pale Gums – Gums may appear bright red initially, then become pale as heatstroke progresses.
  4. Lethargy and Weakness – Your dog may seem unusually tired, weak, or unable to stand or walk.
  5. Vomiting or Diarrhea – Vomiting, diarrhea, or both, sometimes with blood, can be symptoms of heatstroke.
  6. Confusion or Disorientation – Your dog might appear dazed, confused, or have difficulty responding to commands.
  7. Increased Heart Rate – A rapid heartbeat can indicate that your dog is struggling to cool down.
  8. Collapse or Seizures – In severe cases, a dog may collapse, have seizures, or become unconscious.

What to Do If Your Dog Shows Signs of Heatstroke

  1. Move to a Cooler Area – Immediately move your dog to a shaded or air-conditioned area.
  2. Provide Water – Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water to drink. Do not force them to drink.
  3. Cool Your Dog Down – Use cool, wet towels on their body, especially around the neck, armpits, and groin area. You can also use a fan to help with cooling.
  4. Avoid Ice or Very Cold Water – Do not use ice or ice-cold water as it can constrict blood vessels and impede cooling.
  5. Seek Veterinary Attention Immediately – Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Contact your vet immediately or take your dog to the nearest veterinary clinic.

Preventing Heatstroke

  • Avoid Midday Walks: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
  • Provide Shade and Water: Always ensure your dog has access to shade and fresh water.
  • Avoid Hot Cars: Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short time.
  • Limit Exercise: Reduce intense exercise during hot weather.
  • Know Your Dog: Some breeds, like brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, are more susceptible to heatstroke.

By understanding and recognising the signs of heatstroke, you can act quickly to protect your dog from this dangerous condition. Always be vigilant during warm weather and take steps to keep your furry friend cool and safe.

If you are worried that your dog may be suffering with heatstroke, please consult your vet immensely.
