Ear mites are a skin parasite that can cause itchy ears, waxy ears and ear infections. We more commonly see this in young animals, although it can be found at any age. The most common way that your pet might pick up ear mites is through contact with another infected animal although ear mites can sometimes be picked up from a home or garden environment.
Luckily ears mites are easily treated so please book an appointment with the vet if you see any of the following symptoms: Symptoms seen:
- Itchy ears
- An abundance of ear wax (often dark brown)
- Smelly ears *Red, painful or swollen ears
- Rubbing head, face or neck
- Swelling to the pinnae of the ear (the ear flap)
We recently diagnosed ear mites in a young cat that came in for neutering and we have included this cool video so you can see them up close!
